Paddle Antrim Announces the Release of the Updated Chain of Lakes Water Trail Plan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 22, 2024
Antrim County, MI - Paddle Antrim is proud to announce the release of the updated Chain of Lakes Water Trail Plan, a strategic vision for enhancing this State Designated Water Trail located in Northern Michigan. Spanning Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Antrim, and Charlevoix counties, the Chain of Lakes Water Trail offers over 100 miles of scenic paddling through 12 interconnected lakes and rivers. Open to the public with signs in the ground since 2021, the trail is a vital asset for recreation, tourism, and environmental stewardship in the region.
Recognized for its commitment to high-quality experiences and sustainable practices, the Chain of Lakes Water Trail features 84 public access sites, complete with clear signage and maintained through partnerships with 20 local governments and non-profit organizations. These access points provide paddlers of all skill levels with seamless opportunities to explore Michigan's stunning freshwater resources.
"The Chain of Lakes Water Trail is more than a paddling route; it's a community-driven effort to protect, connect, and educate," said Deana Jerdee, Executive Director at Paddle Antrim. "Our new plan reflects the feedback from paddlers, access site owners, and local businesses, ensuring that we're meeting the needs of all stakeholders while preserving the natural beauty of this treasured resource."

To support paddlers in planning their adventures, Paddle Antrim maintains a suite of tools and resources:

  • Digital Map: A free map download on the Avenza Maps App.
  • Water Trail Signs: Informational signs at all 84 access sites.
Highlights of the Plan
The updated plan includes insights from a 2024 survey that gathered input from 140 respondents, identifying key areas for growth:
  • Amenities & Infrastructure: Enhance bathroom facilities and accessible launch points.
  • Safety & Navigation: Improve signage and directional markers.
  • Environmental Preservation: Promote environmental stewardship, maintain natural shorelines, and install boat washing stations to prevent invasive species.
  • Community & Inclusivity: Develop universal access points and strengthen ties to local communities through kayak storage and access to communities and services.
Building on a Legacy of Engagement
Since its inception, Paddle Antrim has prioritized education and safety. With 155 events and classes held since 2014, the organization has connected 2,727 paddlers to the water trail. Signature programs such as the annual Paddle Antrim Festival, community paddles, and paddling safety classes have fostered a deep appreciation for Northern Michigan's waterways.
Looking Ahead
"This plan underscores our commitment to creating a water trail that not only serves as a premier recreational destination but also fosters environmental stewardship and economic vitality," added Jerdee "We look forward to working with our partners and the community to bring these improvements to life."
