Legacy Fisheries - Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council

Heading into its ninth year, the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council’s Ice Breaker Winter Speaker Series has developed a strong reputation and hearty following. Bringing warm conversations on hot topics to the community, this series is the perfect way to heat up during the cold winter months. Join us for an overview of Fish Restoration projects being undertaken by the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Natural Resources Department.  This exciting work includes Walleye egg collection, Lake Sturgeon research, and Cisco rehabilitation.  For example, at the turn of the 20th century, Cisco dominated the forage base of Lake Michigan, supported extensive commercial and tribal subsistence fisheries, and played a vital role in the lake ecosystem.  In the 1950s and 60s, Cisco populations crashed due to invasive species, poor water quality, and over harvesting.  Come hear about efforts to reverse these impacts and restore Cisco populations in Lake Michigan, along with other important fisheries work.
