SUMMARY:Green ER presents author Cynthia Barnett
DESCRIPTION:Droughts in California. Flooding in Louisiana. Rain impacts so many lives in so many ways. It has fallen since the beginning of time\, and award-winning environmental journalist Cynthia Barnett will discuss the whole story in Elk Rapids this July when she talks about her book Rain: A Natural and Cultural History. An extension of the 2017 Green Elk Rapids Days\, Barnett's book discussion fits well with this year's water theme.\n\n\n\n"We chose water as our theme because it's increasingly demanding everyone's attention\," said Royce Ragland\, a founding member of Green Elk Rapids. "It's exciting to see increasing attention on water concerns and related climate issues. Although we may not agree on what causes these problems\, we will all have to work together to solve them."\n\n\n\n\n\nBarnett's Rain looks at all aspects of rain\, from the science of it (what is the real shape of a raindrop?) to how mankind has sought to control it. She talks about rain has inspired\, helped\, harmed\, and become a part of man's existence\, including the changes in rain patterns as the earth's climate changes. "Barnett shows rain to be a unifying force in a fractured world. Too much and not nearly enough\, rain is a conversation we share." (cynthiabarnett.net)\n\n\n\n\n\nA founding philosophy of Green Elk Rapids has always been "think global\, act local\," and Ragland believes an evening with Cynthia Barnett will inspire residents to think about how they can get involved in the conversation and look for solutions. "Our goal is to raise awareness\, believing that informed citizens make smart decisions\, making us all the beneficiaries\," said Ragland.\n\nGreen Elk Rapids will present Rain: A History of Stormy Times with author Cynthia Barnett on Thursday\, July 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Edward C. Grace Memorial Harbor Pavilion\, 118 Bridge Street\, Elk Rapids. Jeff Smith from Traverse Magazine will moderate. Doors open at 5 p.m. and admission is free. For more information\, contact Royce Ragland at 231-264-0618 or roycekr@aol.com. \n\n*** \n\nGreen Elk Rapids began in 2009 with a mission of promoting awareness and support for significant environmental issues at the community level. Green ER programs include educational events and activities\, guest speakers\, community hikes\, special forums\, and GreenER Reads. www.greenelkrapids.org
